A quarter-cent public transportation sales tax will be on the November 2022 ballot for New Hanover County citizens to vote on.
The purpose of the tax is to provide a dedicated source of revenue to expand and enhance our community’s networks for bicycling, walking, and public transportation, including:
- Bike and pedestrian multi-use paths and sidewalks
- Crosswalks and safety improvements for intersections
- Wave Transit innovations & increased efficiencies
- Funding toward the Rail Realignment Project
The sales tax would bring in approximately $14 million a year through goods purchased by visitors, commuters, and residents in the county.
It would equate to approximately 25 cents per every $100 spent, and the tax would not apply to items like groceries, fuel, and prescriptions.
Projects would improve the quality of life in New Hanover County with increased mobility for all residents, added convenience across all methods of transportation, and greater access through interconnected trails and transportation options.
